Shed Foundations - How To Choose
As with your home, the foundation is key to having a structurley sound building. However, you have many more options with a shed than with a home. A lot of it depends on the size shed, the materials used for the shed, what your needs are for the shed and the climate you live in. Once you have selected a good set of shed plans, the plans will give you a list of shed foundations recommended for your specific shed.
Here are 4 different types of shed foundations typically recommended:
1 - Dirt Floor Foundation - By far the easiest and cheapest, but you are very limited in the use of a foundation like this. It is typically used for a pole type barn where you can store farm equipment or use it farm animals and the such. Not a good option for storing those items that need to be in a dry place.
2 - Crushed Gravel and/or Cinder Block - This is also a very easy and inexpensive option for shed foundations. If you are not concerned about water drainage, you can simple have about 6" of crushed gravel brought in and put on your pre-leveled ground and then place your shed on top. For just a few bucks more you can elevate your shed even more by adding Cinder Blocks on top of the crushed gravel.
3 - Concrete Slab - This is the most expensive of the shed foundations but the most stable and dry option. Most do it yourselfers prefer to have a professional pour their slab, which adds to the cost. However, depending on the size of the slab, it could be something you can do yourself and save some money. Keep in mind that concrete absorbs moisture so whatever frame parts of your shed that come in direct contact with your concrete slab should be pressure treated wood in order to eliminate rot.
4 - Concrete Piers - Besides a concrete slab, this type foundation offers the most support and keeps your structure off the ground. Concrete piers are poured below grade and then you will attach beams (can also be poured concrete), which is where your shed will sit. This isn't as expensive as a concrete slab, but it will take more time and cost a little more than option 2 above.
The one thing that is a must for any foundation you choose is that it must be completely level. If it isn't level, you will constantly have problems with windows and doors fitting properly, water drainage and your new shed may end up leaning which will put a lot of stress on the building.
I can't stress enough how important shed foundations are. As mentioned above, a good set of plans should have a detailed description of the different shed foundations recommended for your specific shed.
Note: Always check with your local city to see if a building permit is required, and if you belong to a homeowners association, you will need to present your shed plans for approval.

A Rubbermaid Shed does NOT require a foundation. It requires a level base that will drain properly. Simply dig down a good 4 inches or so, place several bags of agate (rocks that will allow drainage), tamp a little to level and you are done.
The site listed above tells you not only how to assemble, but what kind of base to use. The same as I recommend.
Remember, have a good ladder, and at least one friend, to help you put it all together. You'll need both and thank me later for it. I have been there, take it from my experience.I am in NY. A good set of tools is also a good thing to have.
