About
Us |
|
We believe that significant change can occur
only when the general population, worldwide, understands and
honestly reflects on people's continuing and overwhelming
encroachment on the natural biosphere. Corporate and political
will, can and must be driven by public opinion, and people
at the grassroots level must make their thoughts and feelings
known. The fate of this planet clearly rests with the decisions
that will be made by humankind over the next few decades.
Our Society's efforts will be formulated, keeping in mind
that the primary focus should be on children and young adults.
They are inheriting the foibles of past generations and they
will have to choose the path into the future. Their choice
will have to be based on a true knowledge of the issues with
a clear understanding of their difficult and limited options.
Obviously, no single group can hope to reach a global audience,
especially in short order. We can only hope that others will
feel as we do and that this educational concept will multiply
exponentially. It is too bad that ideas can't move through
the population as fast as some viruses do, because time is
certainly not on our side.
Our initial efforts will include the writing of a series of
children books, production of educational videos, publishing
a quarterly newsletter, establishing a web site, and circulating
our environmental art show. As we move forward, we will add
many more projects to this list.
If we fail to respect and guard this biosphere, all human
endeavours will become worthless, and ultimately, our very
existence will have been meaningless. We will simply disappear
into oblivion.

Goals
|
|
- To educate upcoming generations about
the situation humans have created within the biosphere.
- To speak through art and share this
art in hopes of reaching young and old alike.
- To work with other environmental organizations
who use education as a tool to nurture respect for the planet.
- To inspire people, particularly young
people, to adopt positive habits and encourage respect when
interacting with nature.

History
|
|
The Broken Fence Society was founded 1994 by
Dave Brookes. Dave named the environmental organization after
one of his paintings, "The Broken Fence." The fence symbolizes
man's effort to separate itself from nature, but this fence
will always be broken down because we are merely a small part
of nature.
Dave began his environmental endeavours modestly, with the
help of fellow artist Petra Nyendick. They put their art and
their concern for the environment together and produced the
foundation of The Broken Fence Society, including the mission
statement and action plan. Environmental artists Annemarie
Polis and Charles Taylor joined Dave and Petra to form the
core group of artists. Soon, the group began producing art
shows and visiting schools to speak to children about the
environment. The school children studied the group's art and
interpreted its meaning.
Since its modest beginnings, The Broken Fence Society has
grown into a group of over 30 artists. Their Annual Juried
Environmental Art Shows are being held in increasingly larger
venues to accommodate the demand. The 2001 Juried Art Show
exhibited over 70 artists and received media coverage.
The core group of artists, Dave, Petra, Annemarie and Charles,
are still together, working together with fellow artists,
Gerry Davidson, Sudarshan Deshmukh, Glen Guerin, Tracy Horvath
and others to raise awareness and help educate the next generation
about their role in saving the environment, and their future.
